Smells Like Danger

There comes a time in every parents life, where they must do something very important in order to ensure the survival of the marriage. They have to actually spend a night without their children present, with their spouse. This, was one of those times for Natalia and Nicholas Angeloni. She had made dinner reservations with their favorite restaurant, and she had let him know the week before not to have anything planned for tonight. But when work happened to show up at the last minute, Natalia knew better than to expect Nicholas at the time of their reservations.

She sighed a little as she sat there and looked at her watch again, he was more than half an hour late. The waiter came back to refill her glass of red whine and munched on her basket of bread before he finally showed up. Now, she wasn't going to lie and say that she wasn't annoyed. This whole damn thing annoyed her, that the business almost always came first. Even though technically it was the family business, it wasn't her business. She knew better than to ask about how work was or anything of the kind. It just resulted in a one word answer that made her sigh. And once she started sighing, she couldn't stop. There were a lot of things that bothered Natalia; she had stopped sending their little girl to day care because it bugged the hell out of his family. She could respect that, after all, they were all there, they all loved the little munchkin like crazy, and they all had experience with kids. Not to mention that she was their family; so she hadn't protested much when it came to that decision.

Yet they still had a problem with the fact that she chose to work instead of staying home with their little girl all day. Natalia was one of those who valued independence, as she had almost always been so. Yes, her parents loved her and raised her as best they could, some might even say they spoiled her and her older brother just a bit. However, when it came to responsibilities, Natalia had always been taught to take hers with pride and stride. Which is exactly what she did; not to mention the fact that she rather enjoyed her job as a teacher to children who were Katie's age at the local elementary school. Her best friend Maddie was going to be in the same boat as her....if not worse. Nat knew about Brendan, about his family, and how Brendan was in line to take over.

Now poor Maddie was pregnant, and forever tied into a world that she had wanted no part of. Nat knew how that felt....there were days where the voice in the back of her head asked what would happen if she just left. With Katie of course, because there was no way in hell she would leave her daughter behind. But then of course, that would mean leaving Nick and the almost six years of marriage they had shared. She wasn't sure she was wiling to do that, no matter how much she hated the business.

Was there even a point to getting upset with him? She figured not; her husband was always going to be the same. Family business always came first; so when he finally did show up, a little short of breathe, she tried her best to not be to irritated with him. She forced a smile for his kiss on her cheek and bit the inside of her cheek a little. "No, I didn't order yet. I was waiting for you."[/color] If she had ordered when she had gotten here, her food would have gotten cold by now. Or maybe she should have just finished dinner? No, that'd be too mean of her, no matter how ticked off she was at Nick and his family. Vin was what Nick called his cousin Vincent, his cousin and the one who was going to take over whatever operation his mother was running. Nat wasn't stupid, she knew that something else besides olives was going on. It was just that she valued her marriage and life, not to mention she loved her daughter, way too much to do anything stupid. When you carried the last name Angeloni, there were just things you couldn't do.

Like, you couldn't get in trouble with police officers, because then they make up shit and shit your car. Nat had it happen to her, just once thank god. And then he'd let her go with a warning; the reason she'd been stopped in the first place? One of the back lights bulbs had gone out. She hadn't even noticed it, or else she would have asked Nick to drive her to work that day. Being as they both worked, Nick at the oddest hours and her from 8 till 3, Nat and Nick had to have separate cars. Not only that, but Emily was constantly being shipped from house to house during the week. Nick also insisted on it because there were errands and such that he had to run for the family. Nat assumed that he didn't want either her or Emily tied to whatever it was that his family did. She twisted the wedding ring around on her finger as she watched him, "How are you today?"[/color] Was it horrible that she didn't know what to say to her own husband? The little question should have been safe enough for him to answer, that much she knew.
